Nautical Charts of West Greenland
Author Last Post

Friends, I got a nice email from a 'friend of a friend' on our expedition, and I imagine someone who is on this forum as well. He suggested Canadian charts of the region as an option to compare with the Danish options. I'm updating this thread should others be looking for the information. I'm looking now at Catalogue 4: Arctic of the the Canadian Hydrographic Service's Nautical Charts and Publications and I've emailed with a supplier in Maine. I'll post another update if it proves successful.

Thanks to VD!

Correct. Nautical charts for coastal navigation, preferably large scale.

Anthony, you are not talking about "maps", right? Like navigational charts/ I have only maps." SAGA maps"

That sounds like a great idea! I would be happy to. I'll PM you.

Anthony — doesn't really answer your question regarding charts, but I'm writing in my role as editor of the Masik, the online magazine of QajaqUSA. We should talk about whether you're interested in writing something for the Masik about your trip. Tony Schmitz (apbschmitz at gmail.com

A small group of friends and I are expeditioning in northwest Greenland this summer. Our plan is paddling from either Etah or Pitafik down to Qaanaaq. Depending on ice we may also go inward from Qaanaaq toward Qeqertat. We will work with hunters in Qaanaaq to get transport north then paddle south. Two of our four team members have done Greenland expeditions in the recent past.

Question I have for the forum is about charts and navigation. I have done a fair bit of research, have spoken with the Grønlandske Søkort office in Denmark, and emailed a couple other places in the UK about charts. What I am running into is some availability for small scale (i.e. 1:400,000) charts that are not ideal, and not finding large scale charts (i.e. 1:50K or similar). There is some reference on websites to older paper charts from the 1960s. I'm hopeful one of those might help, but I can't find a source for them online.

Do any forum members have ideas you can share about charts and navigation in northwest Greenland around Qaanaaq?

Thank you in advance!
